Show/Hide Abstract Aushandlungsprozesse von Expertise in einem interkulturellen Lehr-/Lernkontext: AIDS-Präventionskampagnen in Burkina Faso (2003)
Kirsten Schindler Carsten Steinmetz
Show/Hide Abstract East African Muslims After 9/11 (2005)
Rüdiger Seesemann
Much has been said about 9/11, but little research has been done on the impact the events had on Africa. This paper explores how Muslims in East Africa view the terrorist attacks of 9/11. Particular attention will be given to the case of Kenya. What were the effects and consequences of 9/11 for Muslim communities there? How do they perceive the "war on terrorism", how did the changing configuration of geopolitics in the aftermath of 9/11 affect their lives and attitudes? What are the future prospects of Christian- Muslim understanding in East Africa? The paper argues that the initial sentiment of sympathy with the victims has been replaced by the rise of anti-American attitudes among the East African Muslim population. Although this tendency will probably continue as long as policy makers think of anti-Americanism in terms of an "image problem", the impact of 9/11 on East Africa will in the long run not depend on global issues, but on the course of political and religious developments on the national and local levels.
Show/Hide Abstract Construction of Two-Weight Codes (2005)
Axel Kohnert
This is a talk given at the conference: Algebra and Computation 2005 in Tokyo. We describe a method for the construction of two-weight codes. This also allows to realize certain strongly regular graphs or equivalently certain point sets in the a finite projective geometry. We use the method of prescibed automorphisms, which allows us to reduce the problem to a size where we can use powerful Diophantine equation solvers provided by Alfred Wassermann.
Show/Hide Abstract Demand forecasting for companies with many branches, low sales numbers per product, and non-recurring orderings (2006)
Sascha Kurz Jörg Rambau
We propose the new Top-Dog-Index to quantify the historic deviation of the supply data of many small branches for a commodity group from sales data. On the one hand, the common parametric assumptions on the customer demand distribution in the literature could not at all be supported in our real-world data set. On the other hand, a reasonably-looking non-parametric approach to estimate the demand distribution for the different branches directly from the sales distribution could only provide us with statistically weak and unreliable estimates for the future demand.
Show/Hide Abstract Symmetric functions in MAGMA (2007)
Axel Kohnert
We describe two algorithms which were used to implement symmetric functions in the computer algebra system MAGMA. We describe one algorithm based on the work of Lascoux and Schutzenberger for the multiplication. One further algorithm is given for the computation of plethysms.
Show/Hide Abstract Trade unions and the informal economy in Zambia: Building strength or loosing ground? (2007)
Georg Heidenreich
The increasing casualisation of labour forces trade unions globally to deal with a growing number of unprotected and unrepresented workers in what is dubbed by the unions, even if critically, as the informal economy. This paper assesses the impact and further potential of a direct and indirect intervention of the Zambian labour movement towards the informal economy, according to basic criteria like skills development, networking, innovation capacity and access to finance for micro-entrepreneurs. Through providing business development services, the unions also encourage informal sector organizations to associate themselves with Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU), thereby strengthening the socio-political representation of the informal economy workers and the labour union movement as a whole. It still remains to be seen, however, to which extent NGO-like approaches that seem to be vital when opening towards the informal economy might compromise basic principles of the labour movement like effective, yet democratic and transparent structures based on mass membership.
Show/Hide Abstract Double and bordered alpha-circulant self-dual codes over finite commutative chain rings (2008)
Michael Kiermaier Alfred Wassermann
In this paper we investigate codes over finite commutative rings R, whose generator matrices are built from alpha-circulant matrices. For a non-trivial ideal I < R we give a method to lift such codes over R/I to codes over R, such that some isomorphic copies are avoided. For the case where I is the minimal ideal of a finite chain ring we refine this lifting method: We impose the additional restriction that lifting preserves self-duality. It will be shown that this can be achieved by solving a linear system of equations over a finite field. Finally we apply this technique to Z_4-linear double nega-circulant and bordered circulant self-dual codes. We determine the best minimum Lee distance of these codes up to length 64.
Show/Hide Abstract On the benefits of using NP-hard problems in Branch & Bound (2008)
Jörg Rambau Cornelius Schwarz
We present a Brand-and-Bound (B&B) method using combinatorial bounds for solving makespan minimization problems with sequence dependent setup costs. As an application we present a laser source sharing problem arising in car manufacturing.
Show/Hide Abstract Sprache, Diskurs und Gesundheit (2008)
Martina Drescher
Show/Hide Abstract Geomorphological investigations of sediment traps on Lanzarote (Canary Islands) as a key for the interpretation of a palaeoclimate archive off NW Africa (2009)
Hans von Suchodoletz Dominik Faust Ludwig Zöller
On Lanzarote (Canary Islands) Late Quaternary Saharan dust and volcanic material were trapped in Miocence to Pliocene valleys dammed by volcanic lava flows. These trapped sediments are potentially interesting as they can be natural archives useful to reconstruct the terrestrial palaeoclimate history of the NW African margin. Nevertheless, slope wash processes altered the primarily eolian deposits, making climatic interpretation not straightforward. Geomorphological mapping, GIS calculations and sedimentological investigations were used to unravel these processes influencing the temporal resolution of the palaeoclimatic archive, demonstrating that they average the palaeoclimatic signal by some ka. Thus, despite the colluvial geomorphic environment, the valley fillings can be used for palaeoclimatic interpretation of events with a length of at least some ka. The youngest sediments, deposited since at least 2.5 ka, are anthropogenically triggered and thus cannot be used for palaeoclimatic interpretation. The results show that the input of Saharan dust at Lanzarote increased during the last 1.0 Ma and especially during the Early/Middle Holocene.
